The movie was originally a novel by Koushun Takami. I just recently read it and I enjoyed it just as much - if not more then the movie. You get to learn a lot more about the characters histories and there motivations for playing or not playing the game. There are some little differences in the plot and a cool supporting character, who is a nobody in the movie. Trust me... even if you don't like to read, you won't be able to put this book down.
